21st century citizen… Archbishop Tutu’s new smart ID card is on the way – 10 July 2013

CAPE TOWN: The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation offices was abuzz with Home Affairs officials today ahead of the official launch next week of South Africa’s new smart identification cards.

Their scheduled 15-minute appointment ended up taking over an hour due to the Archbishop’s extremely indistinct fingerprints, his ultra-smooth fingers proving more than a match for the electronic fingerprint scanner. After several re-boots the scanner just about succeeded, the Archbishop appended his electronic signature and the deal was done.

Archbishop Tutu is among a group of celebrated South Africans struggle veterans who will be first to receive their new cards on Mandela Day (18 July).
