Empowering girls and women – 1 June 2013

Rev Mpho Tutu joined the likes of Beyonce and J-Lo on stage at the Sound of Change Live charity concert in London, on 1 June 2013. Archbishop Tutu sent a video message of support (see text below). The concert, at Twickenham Rugby Stadium, was arranged to raise money and awareness for the empowerment of women and children.

Archbishop Tutu’s Message to the Chime for Change concert at Twickenham

EMPOWERING GIRLS AND WOMEN IS THE CHALLENGE OF OUR TIME.

AND I WANT TO SAY A SPECIAL WORD TO THE MEN AND BOYS WHO ARE LISTENING.

IT IS BY STANDING UP FOR GIRLS AND WOMEN THAT WE TRULY MEASURE UP AS MEN.

I THINK OF A BRAVE YOUNG MAN I MET IN THE INDIAN STATE OF BIHAR… A PLACE WHERE 69 PERCENT OF GIRLS ARE MARRIED BEFORE THE AGE OF 18.

THE WEIGHT OF TRADITION AND CULTURE IS GREAT.

BUT THE WISDOM OF YOUTH IS GREATER.

THIS YOUNG MAN, PREMNATH, JUST 18 HIMSELF, WAS BEING PRESSURED BY HIS FATHER TO MARRY.

BUT PREM REFUSED.

AND TOGETHER WITH GIRLS AND BOYS IN THE “JAGRITI” MOVEMENT… HE IS MOBILIZING TENS OF THOUSANDS OF YOUNG PEOPLE TO PLEDGE TO RESIST EARLY MARRIAGE.

PREM’S EXAMPLE REMINDS US THAT “THE WAY THINGS ARE” IS NOT “THE WAY THAT THINGS ALWAYS MUST BE.”

WE ARE MADE FOR GOODNESS.

WE CAN MAKE THINGS BETTER.

THIS IS THE TIME FOR A REVOLUTION FOR WOMEN.  AND WE EACH MUST PLAY A PART!
