Staff of the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation have been hard at work at the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital this week preparing a special Christmas present for handover at a special ceremony tomorrow.

In October, the Foundation launched the Leah Tutu Unsung Heroes award. Proceeds from an auction at the event have been used to refurbish and decorate the dining room for the Kangaroo Mother Care Unit, in Ward G8, and to fund the donation of R15 000 to the Tygerberg Children’s Trust.

“We have a very special relationship with Tygerberg Hospital,” explained Executive Director of the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, the Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu. “The Arch and Mrs Tutu are patrons of the Children’s Hospital; they have visited the children and staff over they years. Last Christmas, we were delighted to be able to refurbish a playroom. My mother, Mrs Leah Tutu, joined us. She read and distributed christmas gifts to the children. It was very special. My father had a boyhood dream of attending medical school. A couple of years ago, he was able to join a class of medical students doing a practical course at the hospital.”

Media are invited to join the celebration, which begins at 10am on Friday 11 December. The programme includes a ribbon cutting ceremony, brunch in the new dining room, and the giving of gifts to children in the wards.
