THE THREADS THAT GIVE THE FABRIC OF THE NATION ITS STRENGTH – UNSUNG HEROES AWARD

Scattered far and wide across the valleys and plains of our beautiful country in the cadre of extraordinary “ordinary” South Africans, threads who give the fabric of our nation strength.

They perform incredible acts of kindness and compassion in the service of their people – selflessly – fuelled by love, not money. You probably haven’t seen them on TV. Their contributions to their communities, our community, usually go unacknowledged.

History tends to be dominated by charismatic politicians and mighty military generals but it is made by regular women and men with the heart and courage to rise above their own individual interests to serve the interests of the group.

These are the people who held us together despite apartheid’s best efforts to crush our collective spirit, and who have since enabled us to absorb HIV and Aids crushing blows and continuing inequity that surrounds us.
Our Unsung Heroes.

The Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation believes it is important to shine a light on some of these people, to bring them into public view for all to appreciate the rich tapestry of our history.

Through recognising unsung heroes in our midst we hold fast to their legacy of courage, peace making, self-sacrifice and servant leadership, we learn from them and we encourage future generations to emulate them.

The only ingredients needed to change the world are determination and willingness to work for others.
