Unveiling of revamped Children’s Centre – 22 October 2013

CAPE TOWN: The Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, represented by Executive Director Rev Mpho Tutu and Archbishop Tutu, were on hand to welcome the re-birth of a special home in Newlands.

The facility, around the corner from the world famous Newlands Cricket and Rugby Stadia, provides living space for the families of children who are in hospital far from their homes. There are also presently a number of abandoned babiesbeing cared for at the home.

Many out-of-town parents have nowhere to stay when their children are admitted to hospitals in the city. Some sleep uncomfortably and precariously in hospital corridors; others’ even less comfortably on the streets.

The plight of these desperate parents, already traumatised by the medical condition of their children, was the inspiration for the establishment of the Out of Africa Children’s Fund.

Archbishop Tutu commended Ms Kim Highveld, the driving force behind the Fund and the revamped home, for “putting a smile on God’s face”.
