Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu underwent a small investigative procedure last night to determine the status of an infection he has battled to shake off for several weeks.

His medical team pronounced themselves satisfied with the progress of his antibiotic treatment, his daughter, the Reverend Canon Tutu said. He would remain in hospital for further observation and treatment for another few days.

Although the cancer, itself, was under control, the infection was a consequence of past treatment that the Archbishop had received for prostate cancer, the Reverend Canon Tutu said.

On behalf of the family, she again thanked everyone at home, on the continent and abroad whose prayers and support had sustained the Archbishop over the past several weeks. The family was very touched by the graciousness of the ruling party, opposition parties – and President Zuma, who had asked the nation to pray for her father, she said.
