The Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation is holding two leading examples of humanity in its prayers this week.

Bishop Charles Albertyn and President Jimmy Carter, close friends and indispensable colleagues of Archbishop Desmond Tutu at different stages of his career, are battling life-threatening illnesses in Cape Town and Atlanta, respectively.

Bishop Charles, a wise and deeply loved priest of profound insight and sensitivity – with an uproarious sense of humour – is receiving intensive treatment for pneumonia.

President Carter, who served The Elders alongside Archbishop Tutu, announced on Wednesday that the cancer doctors discovered on his liver earlier this year had spread to his brain. President Carter’s faith has been an essential ingredient in sustaining his power and sense of wellbeing, even in times of crises.

To Bishop Charles, President Carter, and their families, we say: Thank you for a lifetime of service to justice. May God bless you and give you the strength to confront these illnesses with the courage and dignity that have always defined you.
