On August 22, 2024, we gathered together in partnership with Open Secrets to commemorate the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of Dulcie Evonne September. Born in 1935, Dulcie was a teacher, activist, and stalwart of the anti-apartheid struggle. Her life was tragically cut short when she was assassinated in Paris on March 29, 1988, but her courage and dedication continue to inspire.
The evening began with a screening of They Killed Dulcie, a powerful listening cinema experience that brought her story to life. This was followed by an insightful panel discussion featuring Ntombenhle Shezi, our Advocacy and Communications Manager; Denise Newman, actress from Cold Case: Revisiting Dulcie September; and Kelly-Eve Koopman, writer and activist. Together, they reflected on Dulcie’s remarkable contributions and the lessons her legacy holds for us today.
We are deeply grateful to all who attended and helped keep Dulcie’s memory alive through this moving tribute.
The episode is available for listening on Open Secret’s podcast.
