John Allen is a writer, editor, and former executive editor of the African news website, allAfrica.com. He reported on the anti-apartheid activism of South African churches from 1976, and later worked for Archbishop Tutu for 13 years, first as his press secretary in the church, then as communications director of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and finally heading Tutu’s office at Emory University in Atlanta. He directed communications for Trinity Church Wall Street, and at present consults for the Archbishop of Cape Town, Thabo Makgoba. He has written a biography of Desmond Tutu and edited three collections of Tutu’s works. The books have been published in eight languages. He has served as an advisory board member of the Graca Machel Foundation’s Women in Media Network and serves on the advisory board of the Africa Portal of the SA Institute for International Affairs.
