Piyushi Kotecha joined the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation as CEO in June 2019. What drives her, is the urgency in safeguarding and promoting the living legacy of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and Mrs Leah Tutu for posterity. For decades, the Arch was globally the voice for the voiceless. His legacy should be galvanised in a rich, powerful, textured tapestry of hope and learning worldwide.
Piyushi’s professional career in the higher education sector and civil society spans across key policy-development, transformation processes and institutional building and advocacy processes in the pre-apartheid period and post-apartheid period. Her wealth of experience was gained at the interface of strategic, political, academic, inter-disciplinary, governmental, and civil society.
She was the founder and CEO of the Southern African Regional Universities Association (SARUA) where she pioneered high-level leadership dialogues, created knowledge networks, represented higher education interests to governments, provided leadership training, developed policy briefs, and forged international partnerships. She served on various policy and international boards, provided strategic advice to Ministerial Summits at SADC, to several international agencies, to donor forums and development organisations, all aimed at strengthening higher education in Africa. Previously, she was the CEO of the South African Universities Vice-Chancellors Association (SAUVCA) which engaged in major policy, governance and developmental issues in the post-apartheid era.
