This is our story

Founded in 2011, the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation represents one of the world’s most iconic leaders, and his life-long partner. The Foundation strives to ensure their uncompromised bravery is celebrated, communicated and curated for posterity.

THE FOUNDATION

Guided by the values of our Founders, our goal is to nurture a generation of courageous leaders – from all ages and walks of life – to have an impact in the world by embodying the values and example left to us by Archbishop Tutu.

We carry the Arch’s legacy as a global signpost for exceptional leadership, and
profound moral courage. To tackle the challenges of our time effectively, we need
both technical development solutions and a new wave of action driven by courage,
capacity, and compassion – at a societal level. This latter work to reimagine the
nature of our societies is the focus of the Tutu Legacy Foundation. We do this
through three programmes.

THE FOUNDATION

Guided by the values of its Founders, the Foundation uses the Tutu’s rich archival heritage to promote learning, leadership and dialogue.

This takes place through research and development, archival digitisation, exhibition design and curation and effective programmes and events to promote these values. The core of the Foundation’s work is The Courage to Heal, which is supported by three strategic pillars.

Through using the platform of the Truth to Power exhibition, we engage a wide range of audiences in learning about the story and impact of Archbishop Desmond and Mrs Leah Tutu.

We serve thousands of school learners to engage with values of leadership, principles of democracy, and the healing work needed by our society. We engage young children with the imaginative stories inspired by Tutu’s own children’s books. And we reach the broader public in programmes and efforts to tell and share stories of hope and courage in South Africa, and the world.

This programme builds a dynamic connection between the internal work we need to do as human beings and our contribution to reshaping our societies. We use in-person and online tools to grow diverse circles of courage around the world – a network committed to justice, equality, healing, and our shared humanity.

At the heart of our work is the mission to extend Archbishop Tutu’s commitment to societal healing, so powerfully demonstrated through chairing the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Advocacy for Societal Healing

Through this work we engage in:
• Reconciliation, through which we keep trying to find each other across divides;
• Reparation, through which we collectively take action against injustice and oppression; and
• Reimagination, through which we reimagine who we can be together as a society.
We do this through courageous conversations, healing methodologies, and deep dialogue work to strengthen democracy, tackle violence and conflict, and build our shared humanity.
